I have been looking at a lot of Mexican folk art recently and I tried to mimic their styles.

Unreleased Video of Jean Micheal Basquiat
Jean Micheal Basquiat was considered one of the most important artists of the 1980s. This interview was done in 1986, just two years before Micheal's death from a heroin overdose. The footage has not been seen by the public for over 20 years...I am quite curious about this interview and will definitely see it (it was released on February 21st).
Edie Sedgwick
I just watched Factory Girl for the 5th time. It is one of my favorite movies, and Edie definitely is a tragic character. I have always been more fascinated with her life than Andy Warhol's. I must admit I'm not a huge Studio 54 fan...I just don't get most of Warhol's work, maybe with an Art History course or two it'll sink in.

Balancing Life
Posts will not be as frequent this week on this blog because I really really need to concentrate on my music blog (which I had for a longer period of time, almost a year in fact: TheMusicGeek). Plus, I am trying to work with new mediums, although I love my Faber Castell pencil set, (believe me I've had it for 7 years and it has served me well) I want to experiment with watercolors and maybe pastels (of course I still have to get supplies). Getting back into watercolors is going to take a while. As someone who likes "control" over my work, watercolors are going to be quite difficult to getting used to, however as I delve deeper into abstract art experiments I am drawn to how fluid and muted water colors look on paper. I also have school...and don't worry I am a very good student =) so the end of this rambling paragraph is that don't expect as much art from me in the coming weeks...not that there will be a complete dry spell...but still.
Photo Shoot
This Sunday I just went out with my really cheap camera (it's a Kodak Easy Share Z730 if you were wondering) and just decided to snap a few photos of a late February afternoon. I was really struck by the bare beauty of the leafless trees against the stark blue sky. I really don't have much experience with photography, I do have an old Nikon SLR (it takes film) and I am struggling to learn how to use it but by no means am I an experienced photographer...although I may post some older photos up in the future from my archive (I have tons).

A Portrait of a Self-Portrait
I think one of the hardest things one can draw is a self portrait because no matter how many attempts you make at drawing yourself, I don't think anyone is ever satisfied with the end result. Plus, if you make yourself too attractive, people may think you have a large ego, but if you make yourself less attractive people may think you have low self esteem. It takes a lot to look in the mirror and be brutally honest with yourself...and a self portrait forces you to. So here are three (well they are actually the same image) but the first is just a pencil sketch, the second is inked in and the third has color.

My Delve into Abstraction
Lately my thoughts have tormented me (don't pigeon hole me as the troubled artist yet though). I have just been very dissatisfied with my current situation life wise, and am itching to break free of this environmental prison. I feel stifled and isolated, which isn't really new to me, but when I was in middle school and high school so I could "comfort" and quell these thoughts by just telling myself that when I reach university I'll be able to leave. And I did leave, and it was wonderful...but now I'm back and I'm 20. I have grown more and more attracted to abstract art because of my restlessness. This is my first attempt, I think I may try water colors next time, but I don't have very much experience with painting so that will be an adventure...

Cosmic Love
I have started a series of drawing based on my favorite songs. It sounds cheesy but it's been really good for inspiration and has allowed me to be even more creative with my images. This one is titled "Cosmic Love" after a Florence and the Machine song posted below. I am a huge fan and have definitely written about her a billion times on my music blog!
The Hipster
I have had the WORST luck with guys in the last 9 months. I went from being used (almost sexually...not quite) to being semi stalked (I have a music blog and he attacked me in an email for a sentence I posted on a piece that actually had nothing to with him...it really freaked me out especially since I never gave him my blog...I never called him again). And then went through another string of dates and then became a "rebound" for this guy I thought genuinely liked me. Bummer. Anyways...I drew this "hipster" because I'm bored and semi lonely (but not desperate mind you!) and also because I really enjoy creating their clothes. Even though I'm not a fan of hipsters (though I did date one) I do dig their fashion sense...up to a point.
Number 32
Another pencil turned pen drawing done in a 40 minute class period...yeah I just post these up for fun. I don't really plan them, i almost draw them brainlessly. I do tutor though and sometimes i let the kids look through my sketchbook during breaks and one little boy asked me if this was Jesus (haha) I told him no.

Eye Brows
This awful thing was done during classes...it started off as an innocent pencil sketch and looked ok until I decided to whip out the pen and color in the eye brows!!! (why???) anyways it is a lesson...basically I should of known when to STOP! But boredom does horrible things to a person as you can see. She kinda looks like the bride of Frankenstein. I kept her in my sketchbook as a reminder. =P
Looking back at highschool in pictures. Part 4
Just some randoms, stuff here and there I found in the folder.
The image above is a magazine advertisement from the New York Times. I always loved it, and I used it to draw the picture below I believe...
The picture below was an attempt at anime drawing...because everyone else at the time was doing it, but I was never really "into" manga and such I and didn't really like the style. So this was my first and last attempt.
